A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire. Hugh Macmillan

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.
George Cooper, "October's Party"

The one red leaf, the last of its clan,
That dances as often as dance it can,
Hanging so light, and hanging so high,
On the topmost twig that looks up at the sky.
~Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Even though the last few months of the year can be wet and windy, there is just something about autumn that you just can't help but love!

Could I Have Summer Back Please??

This morning I woke up to 64 degrees in the house and I had every blanket pulled up around my ears. Most nights, a sheet was all that was necessary. I have the comforters (2 of them) folded so that all I have to do is reach down and pull them up. Well, last night I must have done just that. And... I'M WEARING SOCKS THIS MORNING!

This Morning's Thoughts

Just went for a walk this morning and loved the sound of the leaves crunchy under my feet and the smells of fall all around me!

Chilly Thoughts for a September Morning

The worlds I paint leave a lot to engage the imagination
by hinting at what lies beyond the four edges of the painting.
I think getting beyond the four edges of an opportunity
or challenge is one of the basic skills you need in business.
 Thomas Kinkade

It was wet; it was really wet. The rain wouldn't have been so bad, but it was a cold rain, so it was a little chilly . But it was fun. This is one of my favorite races even though I didn't run as fast as I wanted to... Susie Bush

We shared our experience and discussed better approaches to achieve greater development in the chilly weather... Zhu Yejing

I love the fall. I love it because of the smells that you speak of; and also because things are dying, things that you don't have to take care of anymore, and the grass stops growing... Mark Van Doren

A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air... Eric Sloane

I'm working on a snow scene right now, and it's summer. It's hot, and I will get chilly. I'll have to turn on the heat. My wife walks in, and it's 95 degrees in the studio. I know it's nutty, but it's a projection you have where you step into the painting... Thomas Kinkade

Words to me were magic. You could say a word and it could conjure up all kinds of images or feelings or a chilly sensation or whatever. It was amazing to me that words had this power... Amy Tan

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns... George Eliot

"Along the line of smoky hills, the crimson forest stands" William Wilfred Campbell (a line taken from his poem... Indian Summer) This is a poem that I had to learn in school and it is still one of my favorites.

Quotes About Autumn Mornings

Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.
Stanley Horowitz

Youth is like spring, an over praised season more remarkable for biting winds than genial breezes. Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits.
Samuel Butler

I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house.
So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air.
Nathaniel Hawthorne

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth
seeking the successive autumns."
George Eliot

Can you tell that this is my favorite time of year!! Everything smells so amazing... not to mention those pumpkin spice lattes!
